Drones have opened up new worlds of possibility for photographic, RC, and technology enthusiasts. As their capability and flexibility is evolving rapidly, so too are the laws and regulations surrounding drone operations.
Recreational drone flyers have increasing responsibilities to understand drone laws and to ensure their flying activities are safe and legal at all times.
Essential Knowledge
- Recreational drone flying and the law
- Risks and how to manage them
- Flying environment - weather, terrain, obstacles
- Airspace and restricted areas
- Quadcopter technology and components
Essential Flying Skills
- Pre-flight planning and checks
- Aircraft handling skills
- Line-of-sight flying
- Obstacle avoidance
- Emergency procedures
The course runs for four (4) hours from 9am to 1pm on a Saturday. No experience with drones is needed and you do not need to own or bring a drone to do the course.
All course participants are provided with access to Drone-wise's quadcopter aircraft for flying. We use a fleet of state-of-the-art DJI quadcopters including the Phantom 4, Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic Mini.
Our trainers are commercially-rated drone pilots with considerable experience across a range of flying operations and aircraft types. As pilots, our trainers work under Morrison Aerial Robotics in Sydney which holds the Operators Certificate required by law when engaged in commercial work.
Each course will be delivered by two trainers, providing more individualised attention and broad knowledge to assist participants in gaining the knowledge and skills they need to fly safely. Class size is limited to twelve.
At present, Martin and Tim are conducting the training in Sydney and Canberra.
In Canberra, the training is held at Hall ACT. In Sydney, the training is held at the South Parramatta Campus of the University of Western Sydney.
Specific details about location are provided after you enroll. The 'theory' component of the course is inside in a classroom-like environment. The flying is conducted in outdoor space.
In time, courses will be offered in all States and various regional areas.
The four-hour beginners course is $285.
This includes written material and other resources, use of the Drone-Wise aircraft fleet for flying and morning tea.
If you are under 18 years of age, you will need to be accompanied by a parent or adult friend or relative. Only one course fee will be charged if you need an adult present with you.
You will get a full refund if you cancel one-week before the course. After this time, you will get a 50% refund or full credit to hold over to another course - whichever you prefer.
The 'theory' part of the course will go ahead despite any prevailing weather conditions. If the flying component needs to be cancelled, an alternative date and time for this will be organised. We will be flexible so we can provide the flying time to everyone.
In the unlikely event that we may need to cancel the course, for example if we do not get sufficient numbers, you will be offered a full refund or transfer to another course date - whichever you prefer.
